Research Themes and Objectives – Field Crops

Objective: To improve the productivity, resilience, and sustainability of major field crops in Somalia.

 

Key Focus Areas:

Crop Breeding and Genetics: Developing high-yielding, disease-resistant, and climate-resilient varieties of staple crops such as maize, Sorghum, Sunflower, Sesame, groundnut, Canole, Pea and Beans including soybean.

Explore to study: research and conserve agricultural and forestry biodiversity that is potential for the development and use of seeds for sustainability.

Research, develop seeds and techniques to increase productivity and reduce the cost of agricultural and forestry production by using modern agricultural tools.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM): Creating eco-friendly pest and disease management strategies to reduce crop losses.

Soil Health and Fertility: Enhancing soil management practices to maintain fertility and support sustainable crop production.

Water Use Efficiency: Innovating irrigation techniques and water management practices to optimize water usage in crop production.
